about

From Psoma Psi Phi

'A Certain Frequency' is a beautifully disconnected album of two extended ambient assemblages by Yama Yuki, a Japanese musician working under the name odoma. Initially drafted in a process of investigating specific audio frequencies that were reputed to have so-called healing effects when listened to, Yama Yuki instead found richer results by following a more intuitive and personal path toward his goal, rather than attempting to force something to manifest where it was not. What we hear on the album is a soporific combination of ambient electronics and minimalist synthesis over a bed of field recordings, very much addressing the form and function of what used to be called new age music, while also remaining contemporaneous in the landscape of modern beatless music and holistic experimentation. 'A Certain Frequency' is a gorgeous album that might just bring the blooms and green foliage of Spring back early from the bitter Winter this year, and Yama Yuki's studied approach to this form of music yields new fruits with each new listen. An absolutely recommended album for fans of Eliane Radigue, early Eno and much of the prior Psoma catalog.

W/P by Yama Yuki. Text and design by ABM&D. This is Psoma Psi Phi number ØΨΦXLIII.
